The Money Saving Expert issued his advice on the April energy bill reduction

Martin Lewis has shared his verdict on the impending reduction on UK household energy bills. In November 2025, Chancellor, Rachel Reeves made a number of pledges in her Autumn Budget, but most pertinently it was announced the government plans to slash £150 a year on average on household energy bills from April 1.
The government said the end of its Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme in March, as well as reducing the amount of money UK households pay towards the Renewables Obligation (RO) scheme through their energy bills, will help to save Brits money on energy bills.
Mr Lewis has now spoken out about the forecast energy bill reduction on Good Morning Britain this morning (January 12).

The Money Saving Expert has now issued his verdict on the price cap.
“What I’m expecting to see at the moment is in April the price cap will come down seven per cent,” which he added is in line with the wholesale rates.
He went on: “So £150 would have been about eight per cent, but nearly all of that will actually happen in April.”
Martin added: “People who are on the price cap (those who never switched) will see a reduction.”
Good Morning Britain’s Susanna Reid then asked Martin an important question millions will have on their mind at the moment – “Is now the time to fix?”
Martin Lewis replied: “Every energy firm will be passing on the full reduction on fixes, and most of them said they’ll do it on April 1,” however he added that some firms were trying to spread this through the year, hitting out at a lack of transparency.
He shared how the cheapest fix is 15 per cent low, adding that when April comes around, this is dropping by about seven per cent.

Martin said: “The price of your fix is also going to drop. So the differential between the price cap and the cheapest fix will stay at around 15 per cent. In fact the cheapest fix may go down even more.”
The Money Saving Expert rounded off his explainer by sharing there is one “tiny thing” Brits should be aware of.
He said: “The only tiny thing is, there are a few very small firms who weren’t on the eco scheme, who have fixes, so they will only pass on the £90, not the £150, but generally, what should you be doing [is] on a couple of comparison sites, get yourself the cheapest fix, or another cheaper tariff? Get off the pants, cap! It’s pants.”
