The crisis at Malita Investments continues to deepen – PN

The crisis at Malita Investments continues to deepen, the Nationalist Party said in a statement.

The PN reiterated its “serious concern” regarding the escalating crisis at Malita Investments plc, a company in which the Government holds a majority shareholding.

“Regrettably, this entity has increasingly become a symbol of financial failure and political interference. In the last 24 hours, Malita Investments confirmed that it has stopped work on three affordable housing project sites – in Qrendi, Cospicua and Ħal Farruġ – due to a lack of funds and a failure in leadership to secure a sustainable financing solution for these projects.”

The company also confirmed that it is currently in discussions with banks to obtain the necessary funds in order for works on these projects to resume, the PN said.

“This means that projects intended to support Maltese and Gozitan families in accessing affordable, dignified housing have now been completely halted because the Government failed in its management of a company it directly controls.”

“At the same time, Malita Investments announced the resignation of its Company Secretary – another in a series of resignations from within the company. This follows serious public allegations by the former Chairperson, who is also a former Labour MEP, of direct political interference by Minister Roderick Galdes in the operations of Malita. These allegations further highlight the collapse of good governance under this Government. Marlene Mizzi also accused Galdes of cultivating close relationships with contractors, and stated that after she raised concerns about these shortcomings, he removed her from her post.”

The PN said it renews its call for the resignation of Roderick Galdes as Minister for Affordable Housing “following the crisis of political interference and mismanagement at Malita, as well as the separate scandal concerning the cut-price duplex penthouse he acquired in Gozo – with the promise of sale signed at the same time the company selling the property was awarded a €27 million contract by the Housing Authority, which falls under his ministerial responsibility.”
