What is the Regional Media Support Fund?
The Regional Media Support Fund is an Australian Government initiative, designed and managed by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT). It is aimed at supporting more viable, resilient, inclusive, and independent media in the Pacific, Southeast Asia and South Asia.
Media across the region are facing a broad set of challenges, which impact their ability to delivering quality media services, including accurate and reliable information that serve the public interest. The Regional Media Support Fund has potential to consider a range of needs and is open to working with organisations that are focused on enhancing the capacity and capability of local media in countries eligible for Official Development Assistance in the Pacific, Southeast Asia and South Asia.
All funding decisions are made by a senior DFAT Governance Committee, with support from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s International Development unit (ABCID) as the managing contractor for this initiative.
How does it work?
- Applicants submit proposals via a Microsoft Form.
- ABCID will collate proposals and assesses them from a media development perspective.
- Proposals progress to DFAT for review and decision.
- Applicants notified of outcome
How are applications evaluated?
Various factors are considered in the assessment process. This includes:
- Alignment with the Regional Media Support Fund’s objectives
- A strong rationale against a clearly defined problem
- Relevance to local community
- Strong implementation plan
- Attention to themes, such as Climate change, Gender Equality Disability and Social Inclusion (GEDSI)
- Sustainability
- Value for money
What kind of support is provided?
- Support is provided through three broad funding mechanisms:
- Grants: The recipient is awarded a grant with a set value to deliver their proposed activity.
- Reimbursable support: The recipient pays costs of the activity, which is then reimbursed by the Regional Media Support Fund.
- Procurement: The Regional Media Support Fund undertakes a procurement activity directly on behalf of the recipient organisation.
