Nearly $38k in unclaimed property funds returned to Elkins’ law enforcement

ELKINS, W.Va (WDTV) – On Wednesday, State Treasurer Riley Moore delivered nearly $38,000 in checks to Elkins law enforcement. Moore and his team met with officials at the Jennings Randolph Federal Center in Elkins to present three checks. The Randolph County Sheriff’s Office received $4,143.75, the Elkins Police Department was given $5,703.50, and the Mountain Region Drug and Violent Crime Task Force’s check was for $27,960.75. The money came from a September firearms auction held at Moore’s warehouse in Charleston. Older firearms were handed over from around 18 law enforcement agencies around the state, including the three Elkins’ agencies, and bid on. Corporal David L. VanMeter with Mountain Region Drug and Violent Crime Task Force, says the funds they received back from the auction will go a long way in improving the agency.

“We cover Randolph, Upshur, Barbour, Lewis, Braxton, Gilmer, and so forth,” said Corporal VanMeter. “Therefore, these funds will stretch out to all those counties to help us get drugs off the street and also buy us equipment and continue to do our job.”

Treasurer Moore and the unclaimed property division have returned over $4 million to residents, businesses and organizations across the Mountain State, but Moore says the job isn’t finished.

“The unclaimed property job is never done,” said Treasurer Moore. “We have over $400M in unclaimed property out there. I think you’re going to see an increase, though, because we really modernized this program, and passed legislation to make it more modern. We just sent out millions of dollars in checks from our cash now program. You don’t have to file for unclaimed property, it’s in between $100 to $5,000, we are automatically sending out checks. If you see a check in the mail with my name on it, please cash it.”
