Homeowner insurance important to have here in Washoe county including flood and earthquake

Many insurances are offered here in northern Nevada to ensure your home is protected if there is any flood, fire or earthquake damage.

Officials from State Farm tell us fire damage is covered in every homeowner insurance. They say areas that are prone to wildfires will sometimes not be insured for certain periods of time. However, in northern Nevada, all areas are insured for fires.

Flood and earthquake insurance are add-ons when it comes to your homeowner insurance. Some area in Reno and Sparks are located in flood zones which requires homeowners to have flood insurance.

Earthquake insurance can be added to your policy which officials say when an area gets a lot of earthquakes in a short period of time, they see an increase in people adding it to their policy.

If your home is not in a flood zone, you can add flood insurance to your policy through the Federal Emergency Management Agency or FEMA, but it is a process.

“Do some research on where you live, and if you see water, talk to FEMA, and get as much information as you can. If you are able to add insurance, look at your options. Nobody’s going to tell you if you don’t need it. But if you see water, do some research and see, you know, if you can add insurance,” said State Farm agent Nelson Pinto.

State Farm says some people who experienced flooding in Hidden Valley weren’t located in the flood zone which means they probably didn’t have flood insurance. They say those who experienced flood damaged and don’t have insurance can reach out to FEMA to help get costs covered but it is hard to get in some cases.
